A New Spectacular Place to Discover with ADA Tours: The Marble Caves
Where the Earth turns into marble — on the shores of Lago General Carrera in Chilean Patagonia.

The Marble Caves
On the shores of Lago General Carrera in Chilean Patagonia, the Marble Caves are one of those places that feel almost unreal when you first see them. The famous marble of Patagonia, Chile, forms the stunning Marble Cathedrals (Capillas de Mármol), which are natural geological rock formations used as a major protected nature sanctuary and scenic tourist attraction.
You would like to experience these mesmerizing stone formations? Ada Tours will make it possible for you!
How they formed
The Marble Caves were formed over millions of years from limestone that was transformed into marble deep beneath the Earth's surface through intense heat and pressure. Later, as the landscape changed and Lago General Carrera developed, its waves began slowly wearing away the marble along the shoreline. Designated as a national nature sanctuary in 1994, the marble is preserved for environmental and scenic value rather than mined or quarried.
Interesting Fact
The Marble Caves are formed from marble composed mainly of calcium carbonate, with about 97.5% of the rock made up of calcite. Small amounts of other minerals give the stone its characteristic bands and variations in color.
Location
The marble caverns sit on the shores of this massive, glacier-fed lake in northern Patagonia, Chile. The site is so remote that the smooth, sculpted marble pillars and blue-water caves can only be reached by boat or kayak as there is no road leading directly to the formations.

An Expedition on the Lake
A visit to the Marble Caves is more than simply seeing them from the shore. Out on the lake, the experience becomes something completely different. As you move closer by boat, the marble formations rise from the turquoise water, revealing incredible shapes, colors and natural arches from every angle. It is only from the water that you can truly appreciate the beauty and scale of this remarkable place.
Depending on the conditions, an expedition can include:
Private boat exploration
Cross Lago General Carrera by boat and travel directly towards the marble formations.
Entering the caves
Travelers from around the world use small watercraft to tour inside the vaulted blue and white marble chambers, which reflect the changing colors of the lake.
Exploring the formations
Move along the shoreline to discover the different shapes, colors and textures created by the water over thousands of years.
Photography from the water
The changing light, reflections and colors of the marble make the caves a fascinating place for photography, particularly when the lake is calm.
Discovering the caves at different times of the day
Because the appearance of the marble changes with the light, the experience can be very different in the morning, around midday or later in the day.
Combining the expedition with the surrounding landscape
The Marble Caves are part of a much larger Patagonian landscape, with Lago General Carrera, the surrounding mountains and the Carretera Austral forming part of the journey to reach them.
